Wildfire Smoke Causes Air Pollution

Posted on August 17, 2017

California has unfortunately been experiencing a copious amount of wildfires recently. An unexpected concern is how this effects our air quality. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the emissions of fine particles when timber and brush burn are three times higher than they estimated. These particles circulating through the air are extremely harmful to the respiratory system.

Wildfires are underrated as a source for air pollution. Methanol and benzene are two toxic chemicals that can be found in the thick smoke caused by fires. These chemicals are also commonly found in oil. Wildfire smoke can often reach hundreds of miles past the burn site. The levels of toxicity in the particles can potentially cause death in more susceptible people – such as the elderly and those with asthma and other respiratory conditions. These tiny particles are 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair and can penetrate deep into the lungs.

A study from Climate Central dissected 11 major wildfires. They found that wildfires caused the worst air pollution day of the year in the affected areas, and the worst day of the year was often as bad, or worse, than the air pollution levels in Beijing.
On occasion, when monitoring the fine particle pollution, the air pollution in Western America is higher than the local air quality meter can read. Large metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Riverside, Califonia have seen Beijing-level air pollution caused by wildfires in Southern California.

Airtek Indoor Air Solutions provides free estimates for air duct cleaning. A professional air duct cleaning to your home or business can ensure the particles from wildfires are not lingering in the ductwork and being recirculated throughout the space. While the wildfire smoke cannot be controlled, an effective method to minimizing poor indoor air quality is having your ductwork thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Protect your health from the dangers of air pollution with a free estimate today. Call 1-877-858-6213 today.
