The Importance of Fire Damper Inspections

Creating a maintenance plan for hospitals and other healthcare facilities will help with their protection systems that include fire dampers and fire walls. The importance of fire damper inspections is crucial. Fire dampers help and stop from smoke or fire spreading through a building’s HVAC system. In addition, fire dampers provide protection inside and outside the duct. When temperatures get high the fire damper will close and prevent from any flames spreading though the barrier. Fire dampers can be found in the HVAC system and it is important to inspect them as well because they play an important role in fire safety. According to Metal Fab Inc, there are two types of fire dampers:

Standard Fire Damper: A fire damper that is listed and approved for use in duct systems where the HVAC system blower will be cycled off during an alarm (probably turned off by means of an automatic fire detector). Also referred to as a static fire damper.

Dynamic Fire Damper: A fire damper that is listed and approved for applications where the HVAC system blower may continue to run during an alarm. Dynamic fire dampers are rated to close against moving air measured in feet-per-minute velocity.

The responsibility of a building owner is to ensure that the proper damper maintenance is being performed and the inspections are conducted per code requirements. Below is an example of a sample inspection provided by GreenHVACSolutions.Org.
