New Duct Sealant Improves HVAC Systems

Airtek Indoor Air Solutions frequently works with mechanical contractors on large projects to ensure that HVAC leaks are sealed properly. During a major air duct cleaning project a few years ago at the University of California, San Diego, Airtek worked closely with a mechanical contractor as well as a sub-contractor who trailed behind to re-seal the ducts after the cleaning was completed. It became evident that these services go hand-in-hand.

In an effort to offer a more complete service to our customers, Airtek became educated in sealants and their effects on duct systems. In addition to the wide-range of services involving HVAC systems, Airtek now provides customers with this duct sealant service.

Benefits of Duct Sealant

In the average residence, 20-30% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. The more CSM loss there is, the more work the system has to do in order to perform. As a result, it is difficult to maintain a consistent air temperature and people are paying higher utility/energy bills.

When this occurs in commercial buildings, these problems are intensified. In addition, leaky duct systems can create condensation, which creates moisture and eventually mold. Resealing the ducts can make homes and buildings more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer.  In addition, there can be dramatically improved indoor air quality when systems are purged of long, often unnoticed particulate.

RS-100 is an innovative sealant that is changing the way that ducts are sealed. It is a water-based sealant designed to be internally sprayed in ventilation and air conditioning duct systems.  It is fiber-free, non-flammable, and mold resistant. It allows flexibility so that when there are system vibrations, the seal does not crack and leak. It is engineered to seal joints and seems from the inside of the ducts.

The sealant is applied robotically using a special attachment called a Nikro, which creates a cone shaped spray so that it can shoot into round or square ducts. The cone allows the sealant to go around the perimeter, not just straight ahead, to ensure full coverage and thorough sealing. When joints and seems are painted with RS-100 from the inside, the seams are protected and leaks are prevented.

In an ongoing effort to improve customer satisfaction, Airtek offers both duct cleaning and duct sealing to our customers. The use of RS-100 has proven to be the most effective sealant with long-term results. Recently, Airtek completed projects at Scripps Research and UCSD using RS-100, and have been able to increase efficiency and safety of their systems.
