Dryer Fires in Multi-Family Housing Units

Posted on January 05, 2015
by Susana Escamilla

Clothes dryers are the leading cause of apartment fires. When lint builds up in these machines, it overheats the dryer causing the dryer to lit up in seconds. Dryer fires however can be prevented if service is done regularly.

Dryer lint should be regularly cleaned. Lint is flammable and can also built up inside the dryer exhaust, inside the hose or in the pipe of the wall.

A dryer vent clogged with lint will also make the dryer to work harder and make the machine hotter. Dryer vents in multi family buildings need to be maintained more often than in residential areas.

In addition, just because your dryer vent may be working fine is defiantly not a good reason to not service the dryers regularly. Listen for any complaints or concerns that your tenants may have when they are drying their clothes.

Schedule a Cleaning When You Notice Any of These Problems:

  • Clothes are damp
  • Laundry rooms feels warmer or humid than usual
  • Clothes is taking longer to dry
  • Damper is not opening well when a dryer is being used
  • You have not scheduled a dryer vent service in a year
