Covid-19 Coronavirus Transmission in Indoor Environments

In the recent weeks, there has been a spike in new Covid-19 cases across several states in the US. Hotspots now include states in the South such as Texas and Florida as well as the West, in Arizona and California.

Businesses and offices have seen a return to operation since the stay at home lockdown was lifted. Indoor establishments that have confined spaces and facilities that have numbers of people accumulating in close proximity to one and other were at risk of further transmission from the virus.

We can determine that through more and more research, which include leading academics and specialists in infection control from doctors to epidemiologists have stated that transmission of Covid-19 is possible through passage in an indoor facility. This week more than 200 scientist’s efforts paid dividends as the WHO confirmed that infected people can pass on the virus when and when they do not show symptoms. Infected persons that are asymptomatic through airborne transmission can pass on the deadly virus to those that are not.

An aerosol is a respiratory droplet so small that may linger in the air. The WHO has indicated that transmission of the virus through aerosols may have been responsible for outbreaks of Covid-19 in closed settings such as those at indoor dining restaurants, nightclubs and places of worship where people are shouting or singing.

Large droplets coughed, sneezed or inhaled or through contact with a contaminate surface is called a fomite. This droplet and fomite transmission could present itself with human to human transmission.

In recent times airborne transmission is the most likely explanation of several clusters of infection including a choir in Washington State whereby of the 61 members in the congregation, 53 were infected and 2 died.

People may need to minimize time indoors with others from outside the household, in addition to maintaining a safe distance and wearing cloth face coverings. Mountain evidence suggests that the virus can stay aloft in the air in crowded indoor settings and infect other people that breathe, inhale or come into contact with it.

Dr. Julian W. Tang, honorary professor of respiratory sciences at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, stated that “By recognizing aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 and recommending improved ventilation facilities to be cleaned, maintained and upgraded, you can improve the health of people” by eliminating a variety of hazards, including indoor pollutants and allergens, he added.
