Free Wheelchair Mission Fundraising a Resounding Success!

Free Wheelchair Mission is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 whose purpose is to provide wheelchairs to impoverished disabled people in developing countries around the world who would otherwise not have the privilege of mobility. Free Wheelchair mission is funded through donations from individuals, foundations and grants. In the 12 years since its inception, Free Wheelchair Mission has sent hundreds of thousands of wheelchairs to disabled people all over the world, giving them not only mobility but “dignity, independence, and hope.”

“Embracing core concepts of service to the poor, cultural collaboration, spirituality, and respect for the dignity of all mankind, Free Wheelchair Mission works to provide mobility for the impoverished and disabled. Our goal is to transform the quality of life not only for the affected individual, but for families, neighborhoods and communities in economically disadvantaged areas of developing nations around the world.”

Los Angeles is known to be one of the most polluted cities in the country. An interactive tool, CalEnviroScreen was released by the California Environmental Protection Agency. This interactive tool helps you look up your zip code and ranks your area either high or low according to the impact of pollution levels found in your area. These are improvements that can help the air quality outdoors but can contribute to the air quality indoor as well. Being aware of how to improve air quality in your home, workplace or business building is important as well. We now have a tool that we can use outside to know how polluted our area is but we can still know if our indoor air quality is bad or good by being aware of symptoms that causes unhealthy indoor air quality.

Below are some key points provided by WebMd.com that can help you breathe easier:

1. Keeping the floors of your business and home fresh.

2. Keep a healthy level of humidity.

3. Being aware of the smoking zone in the building you work in.

4. Test for radon.

5. Keep your business environment and home, ventilated so toxic chemicals don’t build up.

Got Any Old Shoes? Baby Carson Could Use Some!

From now until Friday, August 9th we will have a box in our Marketing Department for collecting any type of shoes to help the family of one of our customers, Western Exterminator, whose grandson is battling Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease attacks the coronary arteries and treatments are very expensive–$200 per week. In order to buy his medication his grandmother is organizing a shoe donation drive.

If any of you have shoes that you could donate, it would mean so much to the family and to us. Any type of shoes (men, women & children) will be gratefully accepted, as long as they have no holes or serious damage.

If you have some free time, please look through your closets for shoes you no longer want or wear. It would mean so much to the family and this little boy Carson who needs this medication to survive.

According to a study by The American Lung Association, “Over 127 million people live in counties that received an F for either ozone or particle pollution. Nearly 4 in 10 people in the United States live in counties that receive an F for air quality because of unhealthy levels of ozone air pollution. Particle like “PM 2.5” are particle that are very tiny. These particles are found in dirt, dust and soot. The air quality that we breathe outside is monitored and has to achieve high standards.

Now imagine the high standards that the air quality outside has to be in order for counties and cities to get an A in air quality.   It is important to feel comfortable in the area that you work in. However, we spend most of our time indoors where the air quality has to be clean as well. Exposure to pollutants in indoor air can have a clear relationship between the quality of air one is breathing and the long -term health effects one can have.

If you work in an office or building environment, these are some tips to help keep the indoor air quality problem free provided by The United States Environmental Protection Agency:

1. Do not block air vents or grilles: Any furniture or objects blocking the air vents can reduce the airflow. Contained areas enable pollutants to build up more in a confined space.

2. Clean up water spills and report any water leaks. Mold, fungi and or any other microbes can grow because water creates an environment for them to grow.

3. Store food properly. Not having a sanitized area in the eating area and not storing food properly attracts pests.

4. Smoke in designated areas.

Dryer Vent Safety

 

“Fires caused by dryer vent lint are one of the biggest causes of residential fires”.

There are two ways that you can tell if something is wrong with the dryer:

1. If you have a big load of clothing that has been drying for 1 hour and is still not dry.

2. If your clothes at the end of the drying cycle feels hotter than usual.

Based on a report by The U.S. Fire Administration, an estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires in residential buildings are reported to fire departments each year. While house hunting be informed of the last time the dryer vents were cleaned out and request the dryer vents and ducts be cleaned out before you purchase your home. If you live in an apartment, you share the dryer with different individuals. If your clothes are still wet after being in the dryer for an hour or the clothes feel extremely hotter than normal let your manager know.

Use the same precautions and if your customer feels that their clothes were not properly dried, there could be a problem with your dryers. Building and Fire Codes in California: Fire Dampers

Fire Damper

The State of California has adopted the International Building Code and International Fire Code published in 2009, which makes some changes to inspection and maintenance rules for all commercial buildings, including hospitals. We thought you might be interested in the new rules and we will start with Fire Dampers.

What are Fire Dampers?

Fire dampers are “used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning ducts to prevent the spread of fire inside the ductwork.” A thermal element or electrical signal closes the damper when a high enough temperature is reached or a fire alarm system is triggered by heat or smoke. Wikipedia.

What are the new rules for Fire Dampers?

In commercial buildings:

Each damper must be tested and inspected 1 year after installation, and then every 4 years, every 6 years in hospitals.

The tests must be performed safely and personal protection equipment must be worn.

There must be unobstructed and full access to the damper.

Any fusible link must be removed for testing to make sure that the damper can close fully and lock. It must be reinstalled after testing and replaced if it has been damaged or painted.

The damper must be tested to make sure there is no interference because of rust or other damage to the frame, blades, hinges or any moving parts.

The frame cannot be penetrated by any objects that would affect its operation or blocked from closure in any way.

All inspections must be documented, including a record of how any problems were corrected. The documentation must be available for review.

Any change in airflow or noise from the duct system must be checked to make sure it is not related to the fire dampers.

If a fire damper is found to be inoperable, repairs must begin without delay and inspected and tested after repairs are complete.

Properly working fire dampers are essential to having a truly safe commercial building of any kind. We are glad that the State of California is taking fire dampers so seriously.
